God’s Love: No Strings Attached

Food for the Spirit
January 30, 2013 / By / , , , , , , , / Post a Comment

As I think about the intense love I have for baby Milo (my nephew–are you sick of me talking about him??), I think, “Besides the fact that he could possibly be the cutest baby in the world, why is it that I love him SO much?” And though I am not his momma, how is it, that moms and dads love their kids with that unexplainable kind of love? This love that all parents talk about, is instantaneous. What did the babe do to “deserve or earn” this love?

I mean, how do you not love this face?? How about that bowtie?

Well we know he didn’t clean his room or obey something the first time he was asked. He didn’t display his amazing manners, or eat all of his veggies; he’s only a month old! We love him so because he is my sister’s son, our nephew. He is a part of the family. He looks like us. He has the eyes and the smile that are spitting images of us as kids. He has part of our DNA. We see him, and start to imagine what his personality will be like as we look into his intense, big (and possibly blue!) eyes. We imagine the potential and magnitude of his life in that little body.

He is loved when he cries and when he smiles. He is loved when he needs a diaper changed and when he is sleeping. Okay, he is really loved when he is sleeping. 😉 There are no strings attached to the love of this babe. He can’t perform his way to more love; he can’t earn more of his mom’s love. He is loved because he is a son, a grandson–he is part of the fam.

Did you know God is the same? God loves us even more unconditionally (because let’s be honest, sometimes, in the wee hours of the night, after the 5th feeding, that flame of love isn’t roaring quite as strongly!) The bible says, “Or what man is there of you, if his son asks him for a loaf of bread, will hand him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will hand him a serpent? If you then, evil {imperfect and sinful} as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father Who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him!” (Matthew 7:9-11 AMP)

Although we all admit we are imperfect, we do the best we can with our children. We want what’s best for them, and truly want to give them a good life. And God says He, who is perfection, can give us more than even a good father here on earth. Do you believe that?

“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?” (Matthew 6:26 AMP)

The birds don’t even earn their keep! They have zero work ethic, zero marks on their badge if good works, yet God provides for them. In God’s eyes, we are worth exponentially more than anything else in creation. Do you believe loves us this way even when we don’t earn it?

Just like our children, who contain our DNA, every single one of us is made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27) Just like we look at our kids and smile at their resemblances to us, we resemble our Father. He smiles at us, sings over us, and loves us, because we were fashioned, uniquely knit (Psalm 139), by the same hands who created the universe. (Remember, He sees us as the apple of his eye!) He loves us unconditionally, with an everlasting, never-ending kind of love. People, He knows every hair on our heads!! He calls us His kids. He says, see that Meghan? See my beautiful daughter (insert your name here) or my strapping son (insert name here)? That’s my daughter, my son. 1 John 3:1 says, “See what an incredible quality of love the Father has given us, shown and bestowed on us, that we should be named, called and counted as the children of God.” Only He is the perfect parent. In Ephesians 1:6 it says God accepts us. He doesn’t just tolerate us or put up with us, He approves! Christianity is the only religion that you can be accepted. There are no strings attached to this love. Jesus took all the strings, and snipped them, no He shredded them, for good. God sees our potential and believes in us no matter what we do.

We cannot make God love us more or love us less. He isn’t withholding or waiting to show His love. We don’t have to do anything, or act a certain way. Because He is love, He is no other way. He is consistent. The person who is a “good person” doesn’t earn more points from God. I hope you know that no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God loves you the same. He loves you and I with the same measure.

Sometimes we go about our days, and without knowing it, we are trying to earn our way into God and His approval. Because we are all created by Him, He loves us. Because He so loved us, He sent His only son Jesus to pay the price of having to do enough/be enough so we wouldn’t have to. This is amazing love! Now that Jesus took all those heavy and hefty (and impossible) requirements, we don’t have to live by earning or striving to receive or achieve. It says that Jesus took ALL of the requirements (the must do’s and the do not’s) and nailed them to the cross, forever taking them away. God wants nothing between you and Him. No laws, no rules, just you and Him. He isn’t interested in your works, He’s interested in your heart. And picture this, when it’s just you and Him, He is proud of you, He sings and celebrates over you, He knows the intimate desires of your heart. (Zeph 3, Eph 1, Ps 139, among many) He wants you to know Him and His love, and give your life to Him and accept Jesus as He’s made you and I accepted.

I pray you are beginning to know (experience) this life-changing love. Happy Wednesday!
